In the early days of the web, the number of search engines that you could choose from was vast. Just as Google dominates today, search engines like Excite and AltaVista ruled the search engine world. Search has now moved on, and as with all industries there have been some casualties and takeovers. Smaller search engines are still in existance, but many simply take their information from the big three engines that have in effect carved up the search engine market between them.
Yahooo! www.yahoo.com
The Yahoo! Search facility is another one of the great success stories on the web. Initially having a relationship with Google, Yahoo! acquired Intomi (www.inktomi.com) in 2002, followed by Overture in 2003, which itself owned alltheweb (www.alltheweb.com) and AltaVista (www.altavista.com), two popular search engines. This buying spree has given Yahoo! a very formidable standing in the competitive search engine industry.
MSN search.msn.com
Just as Yahoo! relied on the indexes of other search engines for its services, until 2004 Microsoft had no search index of its own. However, after recently (2005) overhauling its search own independent index, making it a much more powerful contender. With the power of Microsoft behind it, MSN Search should have a very secure future, with new features being added all the time.
Google www.google.com
The web giant that is Google was founded in September of 1998. Google is the brainchild of Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who were both computer science graduates from Stanford University. They had a burning desire to create a system that would allow the masses of data that the net contained to be easily searched and found. Today, Google is one of the most visited sites on the web, turning over a huge profit every year.
